Robert Fortune, when pressured, spilled this about Usenet scanner conference:
RF> I'm getting one called alt.radio.scanner
RF> It's pretty active with about 25-40 messages or more a day.
RF> Although right now there's a major flame war in progress with
RF> someone called John Mackey, Bill Cheeks and a few other people.
RF> There's also another scanner conference called rec.radio.scanner
RF> I don't know anything about that one. (I access these newsgroups
RF> via a local BBS and I'm not sure if the BBS carries that second
RF> conference.)
The alt and rec groups carry almost the same batch of messages. Most are
automatically crossposted from one group to another. The rec group has a few
more from time to time that aren't on the alt group, though.
For the record, from what I know, Bill Cheek is the guy who used to run
SCANRADIO, and has written a few dozen books on scanning and radios; and John
Mackey is some little snot who got kicked off SCANRADIO in the past and is
now hiding behind the total lack of rules on the Internet to disrupt as many
lives as he can. I've been reading SCANRADIO, a.r.s, and r.r.s for many years
now, and I have never seen John Mackey post a single piece of worthwhile
scanner-or-radio-related information.
