-> Elvis, I am a bit away from Denver, Central Texas. It hasn't frozen,
-> yet.
Hee hee....... I know, Fran. You're connected up to my good friend Gary
Crain.
-> I have a question. You mentioned flocks of wild parrots in your area
Yep! We had a BIG flock of mixed escapees, and genuine wild birds in the
McAllen area.
-> and that they have gone. Can you tell me what species they were,
They seem to get migratory signals right after nesting is complete and
apparently zoom off to Mexico for a winter vacation. (Or to get shot as
grain thieves.)
-> where they came from and why they left. Are there other flocks
Well, some are definitely escapees/releases. I spotted a pair of what
could have either been "Yellowheads" or "Yellow Naped" (I was at a
considerable distance) and I 'think' I saw a "Yellow Cheek" once. There
was a pair of wild Yellow Cheeks that hung around our back yard for a
while trading insults with OUR parrots. I think it was a matter of
species recognition since our YC screamed obscenities at them every time
they dropped by.
Most of the big flock are either "Green Conures" (At least 60%) or
"Mexican Red Heads" (25-30%) Which are definitely native birds if not
all originally wild. Several smaller flocks exist, but I've not seen
them recently.
-> in the south Texas area that you know of?
Yes, Brownsville has quite a wild parrot population as do several of the
small towns located along the Rio Grande. These too are pretty
transient as well, but the Brownsville flocks are pretty well
established. The old Fort Brown area has ALLWAYS had resident parrots.
-> Where is your area, by the way. I have forgotten.
I'm located in McAllen. (Actually about equidistant from McAllen,
Mission, and Edinburg.)
