G'morning David, DW> A while later, my ladyfriend suggested that I should have laser surgery DW> to correct my vision, so I wouldn't need glasses - at least, for DW> distance. I decided to consult the surgeon who had fixed the glaucoma, DW> and his advice was strongly *not* to do it. We have entrepenuers here pushing laser eye surgery, but the public image of outcomes does not enjoy good press; I've not enquired myself 'cos mine are age-related... DW> He said that every laser DW> procedure reduces the eye's sensitivity to low light, so it can see DW> less well in dim conditions. People who have received several laser DW> surgeries often have significantly reduced sensitivity. Interesting. As this cataract developed, I logged the various effects - despite the killing of acuity, the eye's sensations contributed significantly to surveillance, peripheral vision ... and night vision. The thought that coherent light affects rods differently from cones in the retina is fascinating. There is a third kind of sensor in the eye, recently discovered, that reports on general light levels and may well signal the sight mode - day or night vision... I wonder if laser light affects these directly in some way ? DW> So I still wear glasses. Seemingly inescapable aids, dammit. The new lens provides excellent long-distance vision now ... but still needs assistance with reading and other close work... :-) ___ MultiMail/MS-DOS v0.45 --- Maximus/2 3.01* Origin: === Maxie BBS.
