RK FG> Christmas Eve a freighter was sending a seemingly endless string of
RK FG> holiday FG> messages to Rio on 8734 khz Pactor. High speed at that.
RK Very FG> strong signal.
RK I bet this was a Ham maybe having a bit of holiday cheer?
I think it was the regular radio op from some of the abbreviations... it
could well have been his sending traffic for all the crew members....it went
on forever.
I don't have Clover, just evaluated it. I think it is an excellent mode but
HAL is playing bandit with the market...and from guys I know who use it reg-
ularly they tell me they have to buy a third party software package to really
make it work well.
The last issue of Digital Journal had a lengthy article by the inventor of
PACTOR (german fellow of course) describing how much more complicated Pactor
II is. A picture of their new TNC was shown but no price. It was obviously
much more elaborate as far as the front panel than the existing model so I
bet the price is going to be way up.
Was talking to Kantronics and they have licensed GTOR to MFJ to put in their
units. They still maintain GTOR will exceed PACTOR II in a head to head con-
frontation in poor signal conditions. It may well do so....I sure enjoy it.
I agree it is somewhat broad when it goes into it's high speed Huffman mode,
but still more narrow than AMTOR with many times the data carrying
pability.
Yes there is some pretty wild stuff out there on the horizon. I wish I could
go to Dayton to see some of the new "revelations" but am still recovering
rom
a car wreck in January and the trip would be a bit too much.
Will contact you via internet. I got your message over on the other echo.

SPEED 1.20 [NR] Bleep...Bleep...Bleep....yep, PACTORS working OK!
