My "Motors" doesn't go back that far, 76 is the oldest.  From what I can 
gather, in 76-80 models, the fifth digit in the VIN determines which engine 
you would have.  I would assume That Ford hadn't changed much from before 
that.  Checking out the whole list, all engines carry the same code anyway, 
so this may not be a problem in finding out which engine the 72 has.  Anyway, 
the 76 only shows a 460 being available, letter code "A".
All others for 1977 are listed like this;
               Displacement   Letter
               C.I. - Liters   code
               302 - 5.0        F
               351 - 5.8        H
               400 - 6.6        S
               460 - 7.5        A
