Actually in my family (the side that knows how to cook) we don't use actual
"recipes" either.   One of my aunts asked my (late) great aunt
for her challah recipe and it's hysterical "a handful of salt",
"half a glass of water", etc.  Whose hand?  Which glass?   Who
knows?!   :)
