From: "Richard Hong" >> I can understand hearing this from a liberal Christian who favors the welfare state, damn the consequences. Randall, Where did I mention the government? Perhaps you've misunderstood my position all along: I oppose government welfare because it takes tax money from non-Christians and uses it to do charity (which is a Christian task.) In general I oppose the fact that taxation is coercive. But when it comes to helping the poor using money which is *voluntarily* given, I am as far left as you can get. I'm damn close to advocating that Christians should live in socialist communes - as long as you are free to opt out. A socialist government doesn't truly leave you free to opt out. Theologically, I'm within striking distance of being a full-fledged adherent of liberation theology.
