Have you tried GetPixel?  I suspect you have, which is why you're asking 
ere.
If so, my recommendation is to scrap BGI, since the function calls were
designed to run in a 16-bit color screen, and find VGAKit, which includes 
ode
for many SVGA cards (and is thoroughly designed for 256-color modes)
