Even here in the State of Michigan, USA, it is about 1000km from one end to
the other. And Michigan is far from the largest state in the USA. Most
western Canadian provinces (and territories), and the US State of Alaska
are all larger than Michigan. 

When in Europe, I always had to maintain awareness about the scale of
distances. It is easy to think of the scale on US or Canadian maps as
similar to the maps of Europe.  Unfortunately, I consistently made initial
judgments about European distances that were wrong.
