I'm no expert, so I may have some of the details wrong, but my
understanding of the source of the term is that the Taize community is a
monastic community located in France.

Taize worship is characterized by lots of meditative silence, along with
short simple songs (not quite chanting, but close) sung repetitively.  A
"sermon" might consist of a Scripture reading followed by 10
minutes of silent prayer.
