I use link sounds for new message, send, and recieve in instant messenger
programs. For the server I have a file with Homer Simpson saying, "To Start
Press any key," followed by the B5 computer saying, "Please enter proper
code and password," followed by a D'oh from Homer, then "Authrization
accepted," from the Star Trek computer, and a woohoo from Homer.
Error messages include an "Access denied" from the B5 computer as well.
Since I'm blind I use a lot of sounds on he computer to tell me what's going
on. I don't text on the phone or deal with alarms, so none of that on the
phone, and my ring tone is a song I wrote so that I always know exactly if
it is my phone ringing. (I also have some custom ring tones I created for
specific people as well)
On a related note, all device connections use things from the HAL9000
system -- connecting a USB device gets "I'm completely operational and all
my circuits are functioning perfectly" if it connects properly, while an
improper connection gets, "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."
Disconnecting gets a plaintive "Goodbye" from Hal as he's being shut down.
