DS> Anyway, the issue of a highly experienced "older" diver being
DS>supervised by a relative "puppy" is certainly ego bruising as well as
DS>not being particularly sensical (?). I think that's why some operators
DS>started taking log books in exchange for some of the advanced cert's but
DS>still I think they are looking for advanced ratings to be sure.
Nothing like blowing a vacation by not having the proper cert level.
DS>Admittedly an instructor supposedly has training in SCUBA rescue
DS>techniques that even the experienced diver may not have had much contact
DS>Although this is not a popular position It would seem that it is the
DS>instructor rating that is overrated in many instances rather than the
DS>open water rating being underrated. At least an open water diver is
DS>generally given the chance to demonstrate skill whereas the instructor
DS>is simply assumed to be competent, a fact which is unfortunately now
DS>always the case.
I hope you feel that in this perfect world we live in there are some
plumbers that suck, not to mention doctors, lawyers, and politicians.
DS> This is not meant to bash any particular agency or instructors in
DS>general, by and large dive professionals are my favorite people
DS>currently taking up space on this planet, but it would seem that better
DS>screening of divers on both ends of the spectrum of certification would
DS>help and would create a much better operation. Hopefully the experience
DS>issue will become more widely accepted as criteria for higher
DS>certification.
I think Freud would say you may have a problem dealing with younger
persons in charge, but thats another echo.
