Nowadays 1MB is common for a 32-bit DOS application executable, and even larger under Linux. With UDMA access I/O is quite robust and uP cycles abundant above 200MHz to say the least. MS: > a tiny FreeWare which i evaluated lately that's very light and where i MS: > was able to find a quite potent 3rd-party implementation - the 1st Hmmm...maybe, but it would have to be cloned/identical operationally (lite is fine but the lite commands subset would need to work identical as the C-Kermit counterparts). MS: > a late post, it's from Wayne Warthen (http://kermit.wwarthen.com); I have it already, but have not installed or tested. Should work nice for Wins 3.1 which I use for quick jobs (grabbing/uploading to/from Internet sites) since it's a 16-bit app. MS: > `ZMoDem' code from an outside source was added to `K95' so, even I have ZModem myself, licensed directly from Omen Tech, which has allowed me to implement GSZ as an external protocol here (works as good as DSZ but more info to monitor). MS: > `Linux' but, if i were to need an ~FTP~ client for DownLoads only, MS: > `Lynx' would be a 1st option since it has that sort of support built I used Lynx for quite some time until I discovered the Links browser, which handles Tables & Frames quite nicely in Text mode, so I have both now . I do still use Lynx for Text browsing under DOS occasionally. MS: > In the context of a multiple OS BBS system i guess `C-Kermit' MS: > might be more suitable though, especially when one already trusts MS: > `Linux'. :) My thinking exactly. One protocol under all OS's. My Editor (The Hessling Editor, THE, a super IBM XEdit clone) also works under every platform I have here, though I regress to PC-Write v4.16 on occasion . BR>> Actually, my BBS software only allowed Text mode transfers as it BR>> was mainly for messaging, not files. MS: > Oh? What about a .QWK door, your people use to post On-Line Correct, but at 300 Baud (1200 if you were a rich kid) it made little difference, IMHO. I imagine they were obtaining 2400 BAUD in the Lab, experimental only, right about this time (nothing available above 1200 commercially). MS: > it's a substitute for `ZMoDem' only then Binary mode has a few MS: > advantages; i'd be surprized someone would require text mode, MS: > otherwise. I'm curious... In order to Upload a Text file directly to an online Message Edit session (as WC!4 allows) ASCII works well. Saves typing Online time. MS: > i'm particularily fond of: it's a candidate for an `MS-Kermit' MS: > installation and i've seen the transfer protocol in action (but it MS: > didn't last long)! My Download Protocol options here include: ASCII, XModem, XModem/CRC, XModem/1k, YModem, ZModem, Kermit, ZModem/Turbo, ZModem-90, HS-Link and 8k ZedZap. The last 4 are external protocols, with GSZ handling the two ZModems. ZModem-90 is default per Forsberg's latest released package with ZModem/Turbo using his newest enhancements in same. I'm not on a LAN (just an external analog 56k/V90 Modem with Dial-up access to Bellsouth as my ISP) though Bellsouth just came out with ADSL-Lite which I'm looking into at present (256kB D/Ls, 128KB U/Ls, about 20% cheaper than ADSL). MS: > `ZMoDem' would probably be more popular but you've wrote there's no MS: > Binary transfers happening so even this one might not be very MS: > useful. Chuck's ZModem is my favorite by far, but my lack of binary transfers was way back in the early 80's when I was testing some custom BBS software I wrote. In 1997 I installed WildCat! and never looked back . I get plenty of Binary transfers almost daily, exclusively ZModem/Turbo these days. BR>> Post the INI or Netmail it and I'll look it over at least. MS: > Well, to be honest, i was about to post the latest findings I saved it for later browsing. Looks fairly technical so far. :( MS: > persons will eventually question the persistent preconceptions around MS: > `Kermit' and be critic enough to evaluate it all *BY THEMSELVES*. I'd As I am doing, and feel free to call my BBS and test all you want. I can even provide a custom/new Protocol option with an external client if that's what it takes, though WC!4 has internal Kermit already (?). With a Filebase over 5 Gig (21,000+ archives) spread out over 4 Drives, I pride myself in File management/access capabilities and definitely see the need to support as many protocols/varients as possible. :) -- Keep the faith, : Ben http://bellsouthpwp.net/c/m/cmech617/ : { FReq Magic INFO Direct for E-mail address } : + WildCat!
