I think George Lucas beat them him to it.  (-:  Incidentally, Lucas said
publicly that he would not direct another Star Wars film after episode IV,
but changed his mind.

See above.  Both of us forgot about Lucas.  In fairness, however, it should
be noted that Star Wars and The Matrix were trilogies, but evidently Lucas
couldn't fit everything into three films.  I didn't care for the casting of
Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker and I'm not alone in that sentiment.
Even the Queen agrees with me.
