Bill,
IF Mo Vaughn stays, he is the only Red Sox player that is a true power
threat. He wants 50k over 5 years. The Sox aren't willing to talk more
than 3 years. If they don't come to an agreement before the middle of
Spring Training, your dumb GM, who will not negotiate during the
season, may try and trade him. Can't happen? I'd bet you would not
have thought that he would have let Clemens go, either.
So, his being the only legitimate power, with an outfield of Troy
O'leary, Darren Bragg, and either Damon Buford or Darren Lewis
(probably not an outfield which you will remember with fondess such as
some of the great outfields that the BOSOX have had).
Nahering is still hurt, Frye is no power guy, etc, etc.
Who is gonna give this club the run support it will need for Martinez
to have sucess? And who is behind Martinez? Wakefield? Iffy. Butch
Henry? Please. Robinson Checo? I think you see where I'm going.
You better hope they keep Mo. Even with him, it looks like a pretty
dim year for your guys.
