   The initial framework install was optional.  The updates were =
classified critical and would be automatic unless you disabled automatic =
updates and notifications.

       If you don't have applications that use the .NET Framework then =
don't install it.  That's what I suggest to people.  I make the same =
suggestion regarding Java.  Sun's Java download is not just unnecessary =
if you don't have an application to run.  It is unfriendly enough to =
configure itself to always run.

      I've so far avoided anything that required it, I don't see why I =
should have
