Just make sure the radio button for open as "document" is
selected.  It should be the default setting when doing a file | new command
within word. A backup check is be sure that when you select "save
as" the document will be saved as a "word document" and not
a "word template".  The save/save as dialog box shows the file
type that it will be saved as.  Word documents have the name *.doc and Word
templates have the name *.doT.  Documents shouldn't be saved in the same
directory as the template files.

If you open a template by other than using File | New from inside word,
like by specifying its full name and doT extension, then you have opened
the template itself and not a document with the template attached.

It isn't hard if you don't make it hard
