Hi Frank,
FR> Which is exactly the point I've made. The only ones concerned about disk

folks

disk is
FR> a task that takes lots of time and results in no performance improvement.
Saw an article on the internet the other day which brought up this
topic. The conclusion was [ I paraphrase ] "there is a gain but it
depends on how fragmented the files are. The risk in restoring a
production server for fractional gains is questionable"
In reality one would not use a production server but would use a
test server that under ideal circumstances is a clone of the server.
It's a lot of work. The documentation one keeps should contain
performance statistics. Sooner or later somebody will come up with a
finite number on this issue of server disk fragmentation.
I would trash my 4.1 2-user server and restore it but I know the
disk is not chewed up enough to measure even the smallest gain due to
contiguous block server. I suspect the reality is there comes a point
where any degree of fragmentation makes no further difference given a
particular cpu and memory configuration.
Thanks for the detailed answer.
Regards
Eric
