While tripping merrily through the mail, Richard Hall was overheard
RH> This past weekend the workmen were using a machine called an
RH> "undercutter". I picture something to replace ties but all the ties
RH> were replaced this last summer. Just what is an "undercutter"?
An "undercutter" digs the ballast out from under the ties and aerates it
for better drainage.
RH> Also, on every track and time issued, the last thing said is "joint
RH> with trains and maintenance away". Just what does this mean?
I'm guessing here, but I would think it means the track is suitable for
for traffic and the maintenance crew is clear of the line.
Don
... The light at the end of the tunnel is a train coming this way.
