Bob,

You're pretty close. As I understand it, the .NET Framework is the the
compiler/interpreter for the CLR as you said. It includes everything you
will need to compile and run programs written in .NET. Visual Studio
(post-version 6) includes the .NET Framework and an Integrated Development
Environment (IDE). There are actually two versions of the .NET Framework -
a redistributable (runtime) version and an SDK version for developers.

ASP.NET is the scripting language that replaces the old ASP pages. ASP.NET
is analagous to php and javascript in that it can run server-side or
client-side. ASP.NET is interpreted (iirc) whereas the other .NET products
are generally not interpreted. For ASP.NET to run, you need IIS, since
ASP.NET is web-based. I'm sure there are exceptions to that, but I don't
know them all.

As for C++, I think Visual Studio 2003 still allows you to compile
self-supporting .exe files that don't require the .NET, but you can also
compile the .NET CLR for the same files too.

Clear as mud?

/Chris
