From: Chris Bob, You're pretty close. As I understand it, the .NET Framework is the the compiler/interpreter for the CLR as you said. It includes everything you will need to compile and run programs written in .NET. Visual Studio (post-version 6) includes the .NET Framework and an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). There are actually two versions of the .NET Framework - a redistributable (runtime) version and an SDK version for developers. http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/ http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-815 7-034d1e7cf3a3&DisplayLang=en ASP.NET is the scripting language that replaces the old ASP pages. ASP.NET is analagous to php and javascript in that it can run server-side or client-side. ASP.NET is interpreted (iirc) whereas the other .NET products are generally not interpreted. For ASP.NET to run, you need IIS, since ASP.NET is web-based. I'm sure there are exceptions to that, but I don't know them all. As for C++, I think Visual Studio 2003 still allows you to compile self-supporting .exe files that don't require the .NET, but you can also compile the .NET CLR for the same files too. Clear as mud? /Chris Robert Comer wrote: > The .NET (not .Net) Framework is basically the CLR (Common Language Runtime > I believe) plus maybe some other support stuff.
