I think I've noticed that even though I believe I have everything relevant
turned off in Word, I still can save space by doing a 'File As'. This is
not totally convenient because you have to remember to do it, then delete
the original and rename the new 'save as' file to the original.

At any rate, just for a test, I would try closing Word, opening the file,
then doing a Save As. Then compare sizes.
