Yes but an easy fix to that is to buy one full version of W2K and use that
when you reinstall that machine. Who cares what CD you install from, a
license is a license so as long as you kept the paperwork safe in a folder
you can prove you are legal and damn the stupid software checking.

but your problem is easily solved, I've long forgotton what 2 files the W2K
upgrade version checks for but it's fairly simple to burn a new CD with
just those two files in the correct path, a simple google will probably
turn up the information you need for that.

The current environment is a bit tougher on umm... creative accounting, so
the tricks they used to use to hide income until it's needed may not all be
possible in todays accounting world. I think it likely that this is part of
the reason for the current results, or more precisely this is the reason we
have not seen them miss before.

Exactly right, and to do that you have to talk to your customers and give
them what THEY want. Microsoft hasn't been doing that for quite a while now
and I'm not sure if the folks working at MS today even know how. There are
far too many people in that company today that thing customers are all a
bunch of thieves and that the only way to deal with them is to use a
hammer. That ain't going to get MS anything but hurt.
