I tried booting from a floppy to run McAfee's Scan (for DOS v2.5.3
with the 9612 data files) and the program reported: "Not enough
memory to run SCAN". I did this on my work system which reports 565K
free memory as well as my laptop which reports 564K (the difference
being the presence of an extended BIOS area on the laptop; my normal
boot using QEMM v8.01 yields 634K free), each when booted from the
same (DOS v6.22) floppy with barebones CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BATs.
I also tried the /NOEMS switch -- it still failed.
The first question and answer of the Frequently Asked Questions
section in the file WHATSNEW.TXT within SCN_253E.ZIP (which may be
found elsewhere as SCN-253E.ZIP) states:
****************************************
Q: How much conventional memory is required to run VirusScan for DOS?
A: A minimum of 490K of free coventional memory is recommended to
run VirusScan for DOS.
**********************
Is this information simply incorrect? After all, if the author of
this file can't properly spell 'conventional' after doing so
correctly one line above, how trustworthy can s/he be ?
As I recall, Scan's free conventional memory requirement of 490K has
been unchanged in quite some time. BTW, when I add HIMEM.SYS and
EMM386.EXE to the otherwise "very vanilla" CONFIG.SYS, Scan runs just
fine thankyouverymuch. And yes, it (and F-Prot v2.25 and AVScan
v3.07) reports both systems are clean.
I also re-read the manual, which is a .PDF file (Acrobat reader
format; the one I have is datestamped 03/15/96, viz VSCANDOC.ZIP;
circa 399290 bytes), but I found nothing which might help.
