You don't need to be in the nodelist to send/receive mail.

Check out mystic/logs/poll.log to make sure you're connecting to your Fidonet
hub properly and receiving mail and then check out mystic/logs/mutil.log to see
if there's any hints in there.  Sometimes having an incorrect packet password
(or any packet password at all) can be the culprit.
