| subject: | Re: order of protocols |
From: John Beckett Ellen K. wrote in message news:: > I was under the impression that the order of the protocols was important > because when a computer sends a message it defaults to using the first > protocol, and then if that one fails to go through it tries the next, > etc -- is this wrong? Does it make a difference that we use NDS? I forget all about that stuff because we have been (almost) one protocol for a long time, i.e. TCP/IP. However, I'm pretty sure that if computer A is trying to open a share on computer B, then A sends a request in each protocol that is set to use shares, at the same time. A request using the first protocol will be sent first, but the second will follow immediately. The first responding protocol will be used. So, the exact wording of your statement is not literally correct. However, I do recall there were issues in the past where changing the binding order made a significant performance difference, broadly for the reason you outline.
