 You're right, and it shouldn't.  I've got a 69 available to look at.  The 
mechanic who services it told me that there's no reason for the battery to 
spark.  Do you see just little sparks that don't sizzle or do you see big 
sparks that make a noise?  He says it may just be static build up between you 
and ground.  Which would be the little spark that doesn't sizzle.
I'd be interested in knowing what you find...keep us informed here..
