Grin, thanks. I was about to post same. I live in the same area he does so
I know the two tunnels he speaks of. We've had huge heavily loaded 18
wheelers roll over and crash in them and no such problem.
You'd have to take one at 100 MPH at a direct frontal crash to hurt the
tunnel walls. Obvuously that's physically impossible. Anything else is just
a sideswipe, which may kill many people, but wont hurt the tunnel. Happens
all the time from idiots who insist on speeding, and trying to pass other
cars in the tunnel. (Passing is strictly forbidden but fools try it all the
time).
We have 3 major tunnels here. Down town one is 35 MPH (If curves quite a
bit), and the other 2 are 55 unless posted otherwise at times (they have
signs to tell you and can change them electronically). Worst problem is
idiots who tailgate, trying to firce the car infront to 'speed' beyond safe
limits. I *hate* that. Causes most of the accidents.
Might add, these tunnels get *extremely* heavy use. Has to do with the fact
that in some areas, they are the *only* way to get from point A to point B.
