I don't see any problem with you getting a bird, any bird, with your
schedule. Birds want to sleep when it turns dark out. It is their
nature. Most bird owners have a real job that keeps them away from home
during the day. I have a friend who has an African Grey. They are away
during the day and the bird is very well adjusted. In fact he is a
very happy bird...loves his owners and talks up a storm. It all
depends on the quality of time you spend with your bird.
As far as time spent with the bird, it sounds like you would have
sufficient amount of time to spend. The bird could be on your shoulder
anytime you are at home and would probably enjoy it when you are
studying.

Sally Blanchard is very well known and knowlegable and writes for the
magazine Bird Talk.

I hope this helps you. To me a bird is a much better pet than a dog,
cat or anything else. The can be very rewarding and alot of company.
GO FOR IT and good luck.
