Thanks for encouraging me to update my knowledge. I was blissfully unaware

That's certainly the case with switches which have some method that I have
forgotten that allows them to judge whether they are talking to a device
that can handle over-size frames. A standard Ethernet NIC would regard any
frame over 1500 bytes as an error.
