Fido-by-ftp seems to be quite common, and I belive all the intl fidonet
links are generally doing that.

Actually, direct mailer connections have been done for years.  I know my
Amiga software does it fine, as well as a couple OS/2 mailers, and all of
the Unix mailers that I know of.  I don't know of any DOS/win packages that
