Yep, spinning up various distros can be a PITA. I would try a live cd if you
don't need an actuall install. One of these might work for you. I'd suggest one
of the XFCE versions since they are small and would get a quick slackware
environment up for you.

This just started happening with the last few A47 versions. It was working for
me with A47 two weeks ago.
