One of those great moments, one we all have stories about.
I have been photographing and making audio recordings of an attack squirrel
we are about to release.
My son brought three baby squirrels home -- eyes still closed, very young.
He said his girl friend found them at the edge of a sidewalk near some
woods. A dog, she said, was sniffing at them. We raised the babies,
starting with a two hour feeding schedule, eventually moving them to an
outdoor walk-in cage for transition to release.
The three squirrels have developed distinct personalities. The male kind of
goes along with anything, is easily picked up, likes to be petted and fed.
One female is timid, but will attack strange objects, like my microphone.
The other female is completely defensive of her territory, goes into full
aggression mode when approached, barking and chattering her teeth. There is
no bonding to humans from any of the squirrels.
I have a few good shots, but none that really bring their differing
personalities out. I am trying to keep intrusive contact to a minimum.
Release will be today or tomorrow. We are sort of holding out, because the
last few nights, (at least) four owls have been conducting loud debates in
the woods behind the house, and we sure don't want to provide the
refreshments for their meetings.
