Hi Paul,
I went back and looked at some of my old log references, scanty as
they are thanks to my ex-wife, and came up with a depth of 60+ feet in
the general area around the yard as the max depth that I found. Thios
was some eight to ten years ago though so this can show how things can
change over a relatively short time. I think I'll go back this summer
and take a look again.
Another dive you might try if you are looking for artifacts is off
of Fort Williams, I think that they know call it Portland Headlight, in
Cape Elizebeth, Maine. There used to be a military base there which was
de-commissioned after World War II. A train dock used to terminate by
the ocean for unloading ships. At the end of the war they took a lot of
stuff and dumped it into the water off this dock before tearing up the
tracks. Be carefull here though because there may still be some
residual small ordinance down in the area and this stuff is best left
submerged as it is unstable to pressure changes.
there are some older wrecks off this point as well, hence the reason
for the lighthouse. Most of these are flattened pretty well by time and
considerable amount of wave action during the winter storm season so it
is possible to find isolated artifacts that are some distance away from
the parent wreck, which in all likelihood would be buried anyway for it
to be intact.
WE are currently doing some library work to identify an older wreck
that we found down south. I took some photos of what looks like the
remains of a buried hull and some artifacts but have not brought
anythings up. I will let you know how that turns out if you'd like.
   Anyway, be wet and well.
Dennis
