You're discovering win95's ability to 'multitask'. Under properties, theres
an option (under advanced i think - where you'll find the options more
complicated than changing the icon :) ) to set the 'idle time' or whatever
they call it.. basically this is how time win95 will give the process. put it
more towards the end that gives it more time..
If you really want to get a bbs running however, i highly reccomend OS/2. If
you don't want to run it on your primary computer, buy a cheap little 386 and
run warp 3 on it.. (i ran Os/2 warp 3 on a 386 DX40 with 8 megs ram for a few
months, until i got a deal on a 486dx4/100 board, which i'm now using, with
OS/2 warp connect 3 - still 8 megs ram). I'm using a shell-replacement called
FileBar, as it takes up less memory than the one that comes with OS/2 (yes,
you can completly change the user interface.. there are even text-based
es).
I've also run my bbs under Win95 (both on a 486dx4/100 with 16 ram and a
386dx40) - just so you know i know the differences - and my current setup is
the fastest one by far (that and the fact that it doesnt crash every couple
days).
