BL>> Elmore Leonard writes the *best* dialog and creates really BL> I don't remember those plots! I thought I'd read them all... BL> even his early cowboy ones. He's *very* American... RB> I should say, my memory of the plots is faint, it was a while RB> back. The Salem one was one of the "nth Precinct" series AFAIR. No, no,no! That's Ed McBain's 97th Precinct! I like him too for an easy read, but Leonard is funnier and more off the wall. Half his stuff has been made into movies... it's very visual. On another subject... there are times when I *love* the English language! New words usually send me screaming from the room (the use of "grow" as a verb - to"grow" your business when they mean "expand," or "fragrance" to fragrance a room) but occasionally they get it right. There is a trick pharmaceutical companies use when their patent on an old drug is about to run out. Just as the original patent runs out, they take out another patent that is usually spurious (like the size of the pill) that prevents generic companies making the product while they fight it out in court. It's known as "evergreening!" What a perfect word for a complex procedure! It perfectly conveys the spirit of the act as well as the meaning. English rocks!
