An `advanced' book might well be called a `standard reference' to 
differentiate it from ordinary textbooks ...

"Sampling Techniques", 3rd edition, by WG Cochran springs to mind 
in statistical maths as an example of the textbook always cited in 
all other respectable texts on estimating any kind of population's 
statistics....
