The whole McCain thing has me flummoxed.  Two years ago, any sane man would
have pegged McCain as more conservative than Bush.  Heck, McCain is more of
a "true believer" on abortion than Bush, as one example. 
McCain's one maverick streak is this campaign finance reform thing, and I
personally believe that this was an unprincipled reaction by McCain to his
inclusion in the "Keating Five".

Anyway, I think Bush can win Michigan because of Engler's support combined
with the way any decent ad campaign can peg AlGore as an enemy of the
gasoline automobile.  The anti-car routine only really helps Gore among
left-wing Democrats - which means, "so what?"
