  That could explain it: there was a 3rd party network driver (packet
sniffer of the pre-ethereal days) that probably didn't implement these
calls.   I wonder why this would inhibit the mainline stack from
implementing its IP address though.  Switching from DHCP and back would
almost always require a reboot.  Renumbering to another number within the
same subnet would often work without a reboot.

   We had a short discussion on Barktopus about W2k being able to do this
wihout a reboot.  Several others saw this also but I don't know about 3rd
party drivers.
