Try downloading and installing Tame. I had the same problem and Tame pretty
much fixed it. It keeps the dos programs from using up a ton of memory.

How much ram do you have? I tried running my in vm, but I only had 2 gigs of
memory on that pc, and it would bog down my whole system. I moved my bbs to a 
older spare computer with less ram and run in on win xp sp2 and it works fine 
now. (with tame installed that is)
