-> SAS>>I have a bunch of 78 records and I am looking for anyone who may
-> SAS>>know how to value them.
->
-> The *vast* majority of 78s are skeet-targets, especially the big-band
-> titles, Irish tenors, and piano solos.
->
-> Look at them carefully. If they're gray and dull-looking, or are
-> cracked or have pieces chipped out of the edges, they're junk with
-> *VERY* few exceptions.
-> If they're in incomplete albums, they might have some minimal value
-> to someone else with an incomplete set. Classical sets can have some
-> value, but not many.
->
-> Most of the valuable 78s are from the 50s rather than earlier; blues,
-> bop, early R&B and R&R can command high prices, as can certain
-> labels. In any case, the primary determining factor is condition.
I would like to say that one other type, radio transcriptions, could be
valuable. In the "olden days" radio stations would make vinyl
recordings of shows they wanted to preserve or distribute if it was a
syndicated show. Some rare performances are contained on these,i.e. a
song from the recent Bing Crosby box set. A record company may be
willing to buy it, or it just may be the "prestige" value of owning
something really rare. In the latest Mills Brothers newsletter, it
shows a whole bunch of recently discovered transcriptions. BTW, if
you're interested in the newsletter's address, e-mail me at
Greg.rumpff@warrens.cts.com. It's good for Mills fans....
