Yup!  Have mine in a tank probably exactly like your son's.  He's been
there for about 6 months now with no probs whatsoever.  You'll find it
way easy to overfeed though, so remember they only need a few pieces of
the betta food per feeding.  And the very cool part is, when you clean
the tank out, just keep him in a cup of his original water, dump the
rest (without losing the gravel, of course), add some clean, swish it
around, dump again, then fill it (almost) with water that's been setting
at room temp for a few days, and dump him back in.  Works like a charm.
:)  Your son will have an easy time with his new friend.
