RJ> >>IN a message you mentioned the name of;
RJ> Good story. Do yo remember a guy from the Indians named
RJ> George Strickland from that time frame?
I MOST CERTAINLY DO. He was on the 1954 team that won 111 games
out of the 154 game season.
From the top of my head I can remember Vic Werts at 1st Base
Bobby Avalia 2d Base
George Strickland ss
Al Rosn 3d base
Jim Heagan Catcher
Big Mike Garcia pitcher, Bob Lemon Pitcher, Bob Feller, Pitcher
George Zuberrink (something like that) pitcher
Then let me see... Larry Doby, Minnie Munoso (not sure of the spelling)
Gene Woodling were in the outfield. There were other great players but
I can't remember their names. Lou Boudreau at that time was the Red Sox
manager. This graet team had me crying at age 12 when they lost the
World Series (day Games) in 4 games to the Dodgers. Was Chico Carascell
a back up ss in 1954 for the Indians? I think Louis Appricio had just come
up with the White Sox then. May-be he was later for he played w/ the Red Sox
in the 67 World Series.
GREAT question. The 1954 Indians were my 2d favorite team back then
The Red Sox were my home team.
Speaking of George Strickland, as a kid I remember the word STRICK
on the back tire flaps of the trailer trucks and he would come to my mind.
