subject: Bridged vs Paralell mono

Howdy,
We recently added a Crest 400w stereo power amp (unsure of the model#
offhand) to our PA. It's currently used for the mids/highs and powers a pair
of EV 15/horn cabinets. The amp also has a mode switch for each channel on
the back - Stereo, Bridged Mono, and Parallel Mono.
The basic signal flow is like this - a mono output from the crossover goes to
a Y-adapter, and then into each side of the power amp. The outputs go
directly to the EVs.
For the first couple of weeks, we were having a problem with it going thermal
and shutting down for a few seconds at a time. We took it to be looked at,
and the tech said the problem came from us running the Crest in parallel mono
mode, instead of stereo mode. His reasoning was that parallel mono caused a
phase problem at the speakers, causing the amp to work much harder than it
should. Seems he was right, as we haven't had a problem since. Thinking about
it, it makes absolute sense.
Now for the part I don't understand - what exactly is the difference between
parallel and bridged mono? What would a standard application of parallel mono
be?
Thanks,
Bob
