Larry,

That isn't too far from the truth, but the problem with limiting oneself to
the so-called "golden rule" is that it rarely challenges you to
go beyond your natural inclinations in terms of charity and various other
forms of aid to others.

People who aren't themselves in need will often invoke the "golden
rule" to justify sitting on their hands.  They seem to forget that
there is an implicit addendum to the golden rule: do unto others as you
would have them do unto you IF YOUR POSITIONS WERE REVERSED.  In that case,
it becomes imperative under the "golden rule" to reach out to the
outcast.
