Well I removed the ABIT board and replaced it with the ASUS P4P800-E. After
much wiring and wire tie-ing and screwing, I powered it up. Amazingly,
Linux booted without having to change anything on the hard disk. The new MB
has an Intel chipset whereas the ABIT had a VIA chipset. I am downloading a
CD image via the wireless as I am typing this. 177.5 MB so far at
490KB/sec, and so far so good. I really did not want to see it reboot
again. That would not have been funny.

I have not tried booting Windows yet, but I have a feeling it will require
a reinstall.

The most difficult part of the replacement was cleaning the thermal grease
off the heat sink and CPU and replacing it. When I bought the CPU, the heat
sink had a soft solid thermal pad premounted. When I removed the heat sink,
this had turned into a gray paste that I had to srape off with my
fingernail and clean with alcohol. I was really confused by the replacement
pads I bought. They had plastic on one side which I could peel off, and
paper on the other side, which I could not peel off. The paper even said
"remvoe before use". I could not fingure out how to make this
work. I gave up and bought thermal silver compound grease in a tube and
used that instead.
