My first reaction was "85 years old and his parents buried his ashes?  
That would make them well over 100."

Then I realized that "buried by" has two meanings; in this case, it 
appears that the writer meant "next to" or "near"
rather than "done by."

Clarity in writing seems to be a lost art in the newspaper industry.
