If you can't afford gold, copper is a pretty good substitute.:-)
Seriously, stay away from 26 gauge. Unless you are planing on a 100baseT
network, ask for 3NP4P24-color. That's cat 3 non-plenum rated 4 pair 24 gauge
capable of 10 megabits per second (ethernet). It's as cheap as standard
telephone wire which only requires cat 1. OTOH, cat 5 (100 megabit) is only
about 80% higher. 1000' of cat 3 will cost you $33. Cat 5 will start at about
$57 per 1000'. These are wholesale prices, so you'll probably pay at least
twice as much in small quantity. Most standard jacks are cat 4 rated. If you
want cat 5, it'll cost you about $5 per insert. You won't need it.
