Greetings, Phil!!
While you were muttering to Ed Grey, , you spake thusly:
PA> Greetings, All!!
Pardon me for interrupting, phil, but as Moderator, wanted to welcome
you aboard!! (and interject a few thoughts..)
PA> Hi Ed. Are you the 'Ed' whose messages I recently saw in the InterNET
PA> post-polio newsgroup? I did some browsing of that newsgroup and was
PA> appalled at some of the stuff I found there, and came looking to FIDO
PA> for a moderated conference on PPS.
Know what you mean - i have been HEAVILY involved with trying to get the
PPS List-Distributed Conference "cleaned" up! - The cross-postings from
ALT.TASTLESS and even ALT.SUPPORT.POSTPOLIO have been *B*A*D*!! :-(
PA> A bit about myself. I was struck with polio at the age of two years
PA> in 1950. My left arm and shoulder were affected by the virus. I was
PA> lucky in comparison to many. As I approach fifty years old, I find
PA> myself easily exhausted by work around the house, and strained muscles
PA> seem to ache for days. Although I seem to sleep all night, I almost
PA> always awake feeling unrested. A little research into PPS leads me to
PA> believe that PPS could be the cause of my problems.
Quite similar to my story, except I am class of '48, and i was 10 years
old then.. (Boston area..) - One thing different here: My Dr. was
blaming my symptoms totally on PPS. I was uncomfortable with that, for
some reason yet not understood, and went to a Cardiologist and asked for
a Stress Test.. Because of the PPS, I was given a Persantine-Thallium
(lazy-Man's) Stress test (laying down, with heart stressed chemically),
and flunked it ROYALLY! - He didn't even let me leave the hospital, and
set me up for a Cardiac Cath (Dye test).. Again, he didn't let me leave
the BED!! :-) - The Cath showed 3 Arteries 100% blocked and 4th 75%
blocked!! - Three days later underwent Triple Bypass, which turned into
a Quad Bypass when they were in there!! (Guess the Mercedes lease
payment was due!) :-))) Anyhow - it seems I was living on about 10% of
"normal" flow rate, aided by a BUNCH of collaterals the Body had built
around the Blockages.. Dr. estimated I had 4-6 months life left before
I had the "big one"... BOTTOM LINE: PPS can mask certain other, more
serious, conditions, Phil.. Might be a good idea to have a cardiac
workout as well, no?
PA> What is this CPK number that was being bandied about in one of your
PA> post? I am not familiar with that term in connection with PPS.
CPK is a measurement of Muscle Damage/deterioration.. It is sometimes
used as evidence of a Heart Attack, Silent or otherwise, but can ALSO be
elevated by ongoing muscle damage by PPS.. Interesting, huh? .. Mine
was Elevated last Blood workup (After putting up Plywood over all our
Windows because of Hurricane/TS Erin/Felix) and will be interested to
see what is now, weeks later..
PA> Can you, or anyone else, confirm these symptoms? Also, about three or
PA> four years ago, I received some info from the GINI International Polio
PA> Network. A recent letter to them at their old address was returned.
PA> Can anyone supply me with their current address?
Your Symptoms "fit", but look into the Cardiac potentialities, as well,
Phil, IMHO!!
PA> Hope to find some useful info on PPS here. I'll look forward to your
PA> response.
Glad to have you aboard, Phil!!!
Will re-post a few messages about PPS....
Take care!!
Tom..
