Candidate pool? They pulled candidates mostly from jet fighter pilots. Not a
lot of women piloting back then, let alone in a combat role.
Given that the 1950s and 1960s society in the US was pretty male-centric, it
makes perfect sense - as much sense as it makes rationally to launch women into
space.
