BL> On the other hand, those three were willing to fight to
BL> the last man (and woman, for Russia and Vietnam). Was it
 BL> the American clever-bombs,

I recently read an article on the war in Columbia. The author
suggested the govt had a good chance of winning, because, unlike
the US in Vietnam, they have no place to run to. We had
somewhere to go if we pulled out, they don't. Applies in all
 those cases.

...

BL> disloyal Army? IMO, the *real* war in Iraq did not start
BL> until Dubya's war ended, and that urban guerilla war has so
BL> far cost 10,000 of them and 1,000 for you... no clever
BL> weaponry required, just bullets and body bags.

Yep. See below on the Russian invasion of Berlin.

BL> I despair of Dubya's fight against "terror"... he's in the
BL> wrong place, fighting the wrong people. When he sorted
BL> Afghanistan and took Australia with him, I was all in
BL> favour. When he bluffed Pakistan onto our side and
BL> neutralised Iran, I thought it was brilliant! But that's
BL> where he went off the rails. Iraq? Is he kidding? Anyone
BL> with half a brain (snigger) can see that the Saudis are
BL> the real problem in the Middle East, with the Southern

That's what I've been saying for a long time.

 ...

BL> in the jungle are threatening the West? The *easy* target
BL> is the Royal House of Saud. Forget about Saddam, who was
BL> mostly on our side anyway... why not "democratise" Saudi
BL> Arabia, and take *their* oil while you're at it? Cut off
BL> the money, and Osama will gasp himself into oblivion (if he
 BL> isn't dead already).

 About what I am saying.

BL> So far as I know, Iraq is the first to try urban guerilla
BL> warfare. It seems to work pretty well. They kill a few,
BL> the Americans respond and kill a lot, including women
BL> children (the old standby), and the general population
BL> hates American even more. Ho Chi Minh would be pleased.

Some months ago I watched a program on WW2 tanks. The russians
had the best tanks in the world. They took on the German Tigers
and whomped them over and over.

When they hit Berlin the Russian tanks took horrific losses.
Seems the individual Germans with hand held weapons, conducting
Urban Warfare, could do what the Panzers couldn't.

...

BL> ROFL! Maybe all philosophy books are writen that way. My
BL> one had example discussions up the back, and they made it
BL> perfectly clear what the impenetrable crap up the front
BL> meant. What a waste of time it was! My favourite

Never thought of that. Sounds reasonable.

BL> time-waster at Uni was steam engines - in an electronics
BL> course! I never did find a use for it...

If it was hands on it coulda been fun.
